JAZZ ON BROAD, curated and hosted by pianist Phil Orr, launched January 11, 2018 as a result of conversations with many Central NJ musicians about the loss of jazz venues to perform in. Though the Hopewell Valley Bistro had hosted jazz for ten years under the guidance of Darla & Rich Tarpinian, it was essentially jazz-free for some time before Orr sat to chat with proprietor Susan Molnar in November 2017. The outlines of a plan were drawn, a day and date were set, a logo was designed by Barbara DiLorenzo, some generous neighbors contributed a piano, and the word went out — history in the making.

The Bistro Room is a listening space, with the on-stage conversation the primary focus. Seating just under 70, the room takes on a feeling of community as musicians and audience members interact within and between sets. At the discretion of the headliner, the third set each week features “sitting in,” where one or two visiting players are invited to join in. In addition to jazz aficionados, it’s been a particular pleasure welcoming children and teens to these events, as listeners and as surprising guest performers. It's also great meeting ‘jazz-skeptics,’ people checking out the various styles and conventions of jazz. You should come check us out, too.
